Summary/Abstract: Since the 1990s, artists in Ukraine have deliberatelysought to draw upon ethnic sources as iconic markers ofnational identity. Some artists have become interested inHutsul and Pokuttia folk painting on glass, which wasprevalent in the second half of the nineteenth centuryin the Carpathian region. The article highlights thepeculiarities of the revival and creative interpretationof this tradition in the artistic environment of Lviv. The icon painter Ostap Lozynskyi made a significantcontribution to the popularisation of this type of folkart. He developed an almost exact reproduction of an-cient models and created more than 3,000 copies in thisstyle, which he then used to create new types of familyicons. In this way, the artist revived the tradition of thedomestic glass icon in the homes of Ukrainians. Whilein the past Hutsul and Pokuttia folk art was only a re-gional phenomenon, it is now becoming recognisablethroughout Ukraine and abroad. A number of Lvivartists – Oksana Vynnychok, Oksana Andrushchenko,Oksana Romaniv-Triska, Taras Lozynskyi, and UlyanaKrekhovets – have developed the paintings on glass ofsacred subjects in their own style. The artists draw ico-nography from familiar ancient sources and present itin varying degrees of decorativeness. They apply theirown creative approaches, expanding the thematic andtechnological possibilities of the development of thistrend. Overall, the Lviv centre of contemporary glasspainting demonstrates the revival of the folk icon tra-dition in modified forms.
