Summary/Abstract: This work shows a development of permanent exhibition of the Ethnological Department, from the very opening of the Museum in 1888 in the building of the former Civil-Servants Pension Fund, through its transfer into the present complex of buildings, where ethnographical collection acquired its own building (opened in 1913), up to the present In the new building, an image of the exhibition and a conception of the exhibited material were changed twice, in 1948 and 1974. While the first floor of the building, exhibiting chambers of urban Muslim houses from the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina has not undergone changes, the ground floor exhibition, through both changes, especially that of 1974, has been museologically and technically modernized, showing, in a more complex manner, traditional culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Second part of the work deals with changes of permanent exhibitions of ethnographical museums throughout the country. It presents permanent exhibitions of the majority of ethnographical museums in Yugoslavia, as well as most important changes they have undergone. Since there is no substantial differences regarding their transformations, the development could be classified in two stages. First stage, covering a period from the founding of ethnographical museums till World War II, is characterized by unevenness of exhibitions both in manner of presentation and in fields they cover. In second stage, thanks to emergence of large number of experts-ethnologists, takes place a more complex approach to work and more comprehensive survey of traditional culture of the regions museums belong to.
