State and Politics in Teaching History and Civilizations in the 5th Grade

Summary/Abstract: Knowledge about building school students’ political culture takes a central place in modem civic education. In Bulgarian educational system teaching of History and Civilizations plays a main role in acquiring knowledge and concepts about state and politics. This article’s aim is to examine the role of the textbooks in History and Civilizations for 5th grade in the formation of school students’ initial concepts of state system and politics through studying the civilizations of the Ancient World. The article examines, analyzes and compares the relevant textbooks. It points out the ones that to the biggest extent contribute to the formation of school students’initial political literacy. The article underlines the leading role of the teaching of History and Civilizations in this important area of civic culture of the coming generation and their socialization as citizens in the democratic Bulgarian society.
