Summary/Abstract: 2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and of Poland’s membership thereof. It provided an excellent opportunity to hold a summit meeting of representatives of the member states and to review the Organization’s functioning. On 27 January, the anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the UN General Assembly commemorated for the first time the Day of the Holocaust, introduced by Israel and Poland. On 6 May a special session of the UN General Assembly was held, devoted to the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
