Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on two important artefacts from the museum collection, i.e. the yatagan once owned by Ivan Kulin, and Stoyan Zaimov’s yatagan-knife. It analyzes their origin, history, and cultural significance, while also examining the role of these two Bulgarians in the process of transition from regional to national identity. Ivan Kulin contributed to the Bulgarian national cause by actively participating in various armed conflicts and uprisings during the 19th century. Stoyan Zaimov was a revolutionary, writer and social figure with an important place in the national liberation movement. Their similar approaches to the national idea are shown, with both of them starting regionally and progressing towards an interest in a large-scale struggle for national unity. Kulin’s and Zaimov’s yatagans are presented not only as historical artefacts and objects of study but also, being an inseparable part of the Bulgarian cultural heritage, as evidence of the fight for national independence and the Liberation period.
