Restoration and reconstruction of the urban environment in Sofia during the years of the “people’s power

Summary/Abstract: The article briefly presents the development of conceptual ideas concerning the reconstruction and renewal of the urban environment in the capital city of Sofia after the bomb damage of 1943 – 1944. The author proves that the Bulgarian architects and city planners of the time did indeed do much to preserve what could have been preserved, and managed to apply an innovative approach without betraying the imposing „people’s democratic“ urban ideology.
