Summary/Abstract: Fraud and crime in the distributed ledger (DLT) ecosystem pose a challenge to the adoption and credibility of this innovative technology. It is essential that appropriate legal and security solutions are developed to protect participants and maintain the integrity of the ecosystem. The study addresses the phenomenon of fraud in the distributed ledger (DLT) ecosystem, starting from some notorious cases such as Mt. Gox, The DAO and Bitconnect. The first part provides a brief technical description of blockchain technology, attempting to define the distributed ledger ecosystem (DLT). The second part reviews some of the most publicized cases of fraud in this area, and the last part attempts to legally classify these facts in the crimes provided by the national legislation Romanian. Finally, an insight into the vulnerabilities and risks associated with the use of DLT technologies emerges, noting the need for an appropriate legal approach to counter fraudulent activities in this evolving ecosystem. The study also seeks to provide a starting point for developing useful tools for professionals facing DLT challenges.
