Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the Institute of Haematology in Warsaw in 1951 was related to scientific, political and strategic factors. The development of haematology in the world correlated with the difficult international situation (Cold War) and political changes in Poland. The main task in the first years of the institute’s activity was to create a blood service. Organizational solutions of the Soviet Union were used, as the country remained under the influence and control of the USSR.
