Summary/Abstract: The article centers on Thomas Mann’s non-fiction work Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen (Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man) (1918). Against the backdrop of the First World War, Mann’s culturally conservative treatise aims for the defense of “German values”.Thomas Mann’s treatise resorts to polemics. The aim of the article is to analyze Mann’s intellectual position and to expound its problems, but also to illustrate Mann’s effort to eventually overcome dualistic patterns of thought and to resolve warlike reasoning in the fullness of time.
