Summary/Abstract: The pit covered with soil in which the deceased is buried is called a grave and the word kabir is also used as another concept. Words such as kumbet, bark, kurgan, oba, kereksür, kegür, tomb are also used to express the grave. The stones placed on the graves, which contain inscriptions such as the date of death, identity and achievements of the person buried there, are called tombstones. Since ancient times, the Turks have had a culture of burying the dead and erecting tombstones in different geographies where the Turks lived, and the places where they were found were identified and brought to the literature. The tombstone culture continued in Anatolia and it is possible to see traces of it in the treasuries of the Ottoman Empire, which dominated Anatolia after the Seljuks. It is possible to draw inferences about the socio-economic identity of a neighborhood through the gravestones in the treasuries and to obtain important information about the inhabitants of that region. This study will try to make an evaluation of the gravestones in the Kandilli cemetery, which is the only cemetery of the Kandilli district of Üsküdar, one of the districts on the Anatolian side of Istanbul.
