Summary/Abstract: The article points to the basic data on the population of Zenica based on the Ottoman census of the Zenica Qāżā from 1266/1850 year with reference to the collective checklists for the payment of fees/compensation for not serving military service (bedel-i ʻaskeriyye). First of all, attention is drawn to the census units that were located in the most important urban and rural settlements in Zenica and its surroundings. The detailed 1850 census is presented, including the approximate number of homes in each enumerated place and the number of males counted. Separate statistics for populated units inhabited by certain religious groups were first provided, and in a subsequent analysis, a summary overview of the data was provided, since the Muslim and non-Muslim populations were recorded in separate census books. A special attempt was made to showcase the people of Zenica, focusing only on the most well-known quarters at the time. The significance of the Ottoman population census from 1850 for demographic research as well as the study of Zenica toponymy and anthroponymy is highlighted in the second section of the paper.
