THE AUTHOR AND THE FIRST BOOK ON FOLKLORE IN KOSOVO: CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH THE AUTHOR CREATED AND THE OBSTRUCTED JOURNEY OF THE BOOK

Summary/Abstract: By analyzing the historical and political circumstances of the life and work of Zekeria Rexha (1910-1972), this paper will shed light on his intellectual formation to understand in more detail his perspectives on folklore and folkloristics as expressed in his book, which is a pioneering one in this field in Kosovo. Although I dealt with this author and his work a few years ago, I find myself revisiting him again, as I researched and found new sources on his life activity.60 Moreover, I also believe for the fact that this figure holds great significance and is exceptionally unique in the cultural history of Albanians, whose deserved place in our documentary memory has been overlooked. Who was Zekeria Rexha, indeed? What was his contribution to folkloristics and how did the authorities of the time treat his work? Furthermore, why was his book forgotten and republished only after a span of seven decades? We will shed light on these issues and many others by analyzing the first publication in the field of folkloristics in Kosovo, along with the circumstances that influenced the intellectual and ideological formation of Zekeria Rexha, where the life journey of the author and his book were very much a give-and-take relationship.
