Summary/Abstract: Language is one of the most universal and effective means of communication among people. The paper deals with greeting and farewell formulae as a linguistic expression of politeness and respect. The research has been based on the field investigation material collected from all regions of Lithuania. Chronologically, the data cover a period of the whole 20th century. The 20th century in Lithuania is known as a period witnessing huge changes in social and cultural environment and rapidly growing modern society, which eventually led to changes in traditional culture. The present paper aims at disclosing the process of traditional etiquette due to the modernisation of the countryside culture in Lithuania in the 20th century. The analysis of greeting and farewell formulae has revealed that the old generation tried to preserve traditional formulae of etiquette and to pass them to the younger generation. However, the younger generation, due to Soviet invasion, democracy and rapid modern changes, the processes that took place in the second half of the 20th century, chose new formulae of greeting and farewell.
