Summary/Abstract: The generalized shortage in Romania in the '80s was also felt in the fashion field, so the Party adopted measures to reduce the lack of clothing items on the internal market. The study demonstrates that despite the efforts made by the Ministry of Light Industry to fill the gap in clothing products, the measures adopted did not have the expected effect and did not improve the quantity and quality of clothing products on the domestic market. To be able to answer the questions inherent in this topic, the study analyses how the communist regime in Romania related to the consumption of clothing items and how citizens had access to products. The subject I propose was addressed only partially in the Romanian historiography so the sources I used were mostly primary sources such as the CC fund of the RCP, and the Economic Section. I used the descriptive and comparative analysis method to present the measures adopted to increase production, increase profitability and reduce the cost of production and highlight the difference between the expected effect of these measures and the actual effect. I used the method of qualitative press analysis by researching the articles from Scînteia and Revista Economică that represented the line that the Party promoted in terms of consumption of clothing products. Although the Party has invested in the establishment of new textile factories and the qualification of staff, the quantity and quality of clothing products destined for the domestic and export market have suffered from the measures adopted to reduce the production price. The orientation of production towards foreign trade and the series of measures adopted have made clothing intended for the internal market poor quality and insufficient to meet demand.
