Summary/Abstract: Because of historical and linguistic reasons, standard Albanian is enriched and is being enriched by popular regional words and expressions. They are the best and most required values of the speech culture of the Albanian people. Because of the systemic character of the lexicon, certain popular regional words, certain classes of words or certain thematic groups may occupy a place in the unified literary language. Examples: like elbnajë (fields of barley) and grunajë (fields of wheat), the popular word theknajë (fields of rye) may enter the literary language; like përbetohem (make a pledge) / përlutem (beg too much); like bubullon (to thunder) / skapllon (make the noise of a breaking branch of a tree); etc. And, when entering the literary language, the semantics of the regional word “gets oriented” as to the paradigmatic ties with other words of the literary language. Compare shenjëtar (sniper). The word has gained also the meaning “one who is accurate in his speech, when communicating with smb.). Thus, the popular regional word enlarges the lexico-semantic microstructure of the literary language. As a result, what is regional, extra-literary, may become literary (a striking example would be the case of adverbs in –shëm from the North speeches: mërzitshëm: rrinte mërzitshëm / boringly: sit boringly). Then, the literary norm concept in the lexicon of the literary present-day Albanian cannot be limited only to its accepted part, but also to the part to be accepted.
