Summary/Abstract: The increase in retirement costs and the deepening of the deficit in the first pillar of the pension system are largely due to changes in the demographic structure of the population. The processes of population aging, increase in average life expectancy, high external migration and others that started decades ago have lasting adverse consequences on the financial stability of public pension insurance. It faces the difficult task of being able to cover the costs of the current beneficiaries, but at the same time not opposing the interests of different generations and putting an additional burden on the able-bodied people financing these systems. This study is dedicated to the demographic transformations that have been taking place in Bulgaria in recent years and the way they affect the solidarity pension system in the country. The timely definition and analysis of demographic changes related to the deteriorating age structure of the population is essential for understanding, forecasting and preventing problems in the PAY-ASYOU-GO pension scheme.
