Summary/Abstract: In the second decade following the Revolution, a generation of artists emerges in Romania who discover the political and social function of theater. These are artists who view the entire process of creation and representation, from the text to the performance, not just as a pretext to create art for art’s sake, but as an instrument for promoting social change. The political affiliations of Gianina Cărbunariu, Mihaela Michailov, David Schwartz, and Catinca Drăgănescu lie on the left side of the political spectrum. Their theater is a theater for ordinary people, for the suffering of those in disadvantaged social strata. It’s a theater of empathy, a theater that cares for the close ones, a theater that strives to bring about change and educate the audience, and it attempts to raise awareness among authorities about deep crisis situations and major contradictions within Romanian society. To provide a clearer context for their position in the Romanian theatrical landscape, let’s briefly analyze the theatrical tools that form the basis of their dramaturgy and performances.
