Summary/Abstract: The NIS2 Directive is a significant enhancement in the European Union’s cybersecurity framework, designed to replace the original 2016 NIS Directive. Adopted on November 10, 2022, and effective from January 1, 2023, NIS2 aims to bolster cybersecurity across member states by expanding its scope to include additional sectors and digital services. It imposes rigorous requirements for security measures, incident reporting, and inter-state collaboration to address evolving cyber threats, including those driven by Artificial Intelligence. This article outlines the NIS2 Directive’s objectives and its implications for businesses. It emphasizes the need for improved cybersecurity measures, detailed incident reporting, and enhanced collaboration among member states. Key innovations include mandatory risk-based security measures, rapid incident reporting within 24 hours, and strengthened cooperation networks. AI introduces both opportunities and challenges in cybersecurity. While AI enhances threat detection and response, it also enables advanced attack techniques, such as sophisticated phishing, software vulnerability exploitation, and deepfakes. These advancements pose new strategic challenges for cybersecurity defense systems, which must adapt to evolving AI-driven threats. The article further explores the impact of NIS2 on businesses, highlighting benefits such as increased security, improved client trust, and operational innovation. However, it also addresses challenges including compliance costs, complexity, and integration difficulties. Case studies from Axa, T-Mobile Netherlands, and Volkswagen Group illustrate the practical implications of NIS2 and the broader impact of cyber incidents on major organizations. These examples underscore the importance of robust cybersecurity practices and adherence to regulatory requirements to manage and mitigate emerging threats effectively.
