Summary/Abstract: Possible connections between the literary conceptions and philosophy of Karol Irzykowski and the twentieth century hermeneutical reflection are indicated in the text, without applying the modernizing approach. The author’s focus is Pałuba, but she also refers to the critical remarks contained in Niezrozumialcy (from Czyn i słowo) and to selected passages of Walka o treść. The notion of understanding is taken up as the key concept, which in Irzykowski’s writing appears to be a consequence of considerations regarding non-understandability. The analysis of these issues leads to a conclusion that in Irzykowski’s texts conceptions very close to hermeneutics are not so much presented or described as used to put forth a functional self-reference in the frames of which the notion of understanding occurs as the constitutive quality of being.
