TRACES OF THE EURASIAN STEPPE PEOPLES IN ANATOLIA

Summary/Abstract: The Cimmerians and Scythians, who were the Eurasian steppe origin peoples, have an important place in the political history of Anatolia. Assyrian and Greek sources contain information about their migrations to Anatolia and their political relations. Archaeological remnants prove the Cimmerian and Scythian presence in Anatolia. Some Kurgans were excavated in the Cimmerian and Scythian expansion regions in Anatolia, where war equipment was found. Horse remains have the primary place among the kurgan finds. War equipment such as bows, arrows, axes, swords, daggers and spears were among the finds. Those kurgans and the findings are significant in terms of revealing the cultural heritage of the Cimmerians and Scythians in Anatolia. It also lets comparison of the Anatolian kurgans and their findings with the kurgans and their findings in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The depictions on the finds reveal the characteristics of the Cimmerian and Scythian steppe arts and can be compared with each other. Thus, it possible for us to be informed about the culture of the Cimmerians and Scythians. The retrieved data shed light as well on the social, economic, religious and military structure and artistic approach of the Cimmerians and Scythians. Future excavations and finds of kurgans in Anatolia will make further contribute to the studies on their cultural existence.
