Summary/Abstract: The fifteenth century was marked by active communication between the musicians in England and continental Europe, which was aided by the ecumenical councils and the Hundred Years’ War. The result is the presence of over 200 English compositions in the three main continental collections – Trent, Aosta and Modena. From writers such as Martin le Franc and Johannes Tinctoris we learn that the English composers influenced the musical practice on the continent in the early fifteenth century, but it is not yet entirely clear what this influence consisted of. Theories on the matter include the application of characteristic melodic formulae, the presence of harmonic progressions, parallels in phrase length and structure, and the use of improvisatory practices. Gradually among all the opinions the place and role in this influence of the polyphonic carol begins to stand out, because the genre unites the various features of the English musical idiom.
