KIRALIZADE HASAN TAHSIN BEY’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE EDUCATION AND CONSTRUCTION LIFE OF TRABZON

Summary/Abstract: Kiralizade Hasan Tahsin, who made a name for himself with his activities in the field of education and construction in Trabzon, was born in Surmene district of Trabzon in 1875. He travelled to Russia at a young age and studied architecture there. On this occasion, he learnt Russian and helped the people when Surmene was under Russian occupation, reported the demands of the people to the Russian commander, and also served as mayor of Surmene for a short time. After the Russian occupation in Trabzon, Hasan Tahsin, who made important works especially in the field of contracting, carried out important construction works such as Trabzon Government House, Trabzon High School and Degirmendere Port, and upon the recommendation of Kazim Karabekir, he built a boarding school for orphans where the needs of war orphans were met and sheltered, and many orphans were educated in these schools. The activities in the field of education and construction were not limited to Hasan Tahsin Kirali, his son Süleyman Kirali built Hasan Tahsin Kirali Primary School in Surmene and Marmara Ereglisi Süleyman Turgut Kirali Primary School, and his other son Özcan Kirali built Suurmene Özcan Kirali dormitory. On 6 June 1940, Hasan Tahsin left his home to see the construction of the building he had built in Iskele Square and died as a result of a heart attack.
