Summary/Abstract: Loss of parents and separation of the youngest members of the German ethnic minority from their parents and next of kin is a direct re sult of World War II and measures taken by the new Yugoslav government against members of the German ethnic minority in Yugoslavia during the period 1944-1948. However, the treatment of these childr en in homes for children without parental care (orphanages) throughout Yugoslav republics and their treatment in the process of reunification with their parents can not be understood without understanding the policy the new Yugoslav government implemented regarding protection of children while faced with the problem of war orphans, namely, children without one or both parents. Understanding the treatment and attitude of the Yugoslav government towards the youngest Yugoslav citizens of German nationality in the 1950s is difficult without an insight into a new phase of international relations that started in the 60s, just at the time when Yugoslavia lost the German ethnic minority which before the war had numbered circa half a million people. The youngest members of the German ethnic minority in Yugoslavia shared the fate of older members only to a certain extent. Three thousand children without parents were taken out of camps for Germans based in Vojvodina on the basis of a decision made by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of FPRY starting May 1946 because of prevailing bad health an hygienic conditions in the camps which resulted in an epidemic of typhus in spring 1946 and were placed into homes for children without parental care.
