Summary/Abstract: The argumentative metaphor (from the Greek metaphora = transfer) is a strategy that theater characters use in their persuasive speech. It uncovers the connotative character of language, in that it is “an indirect speech act based on an analogy or a common implication between the compared (or the proper term) and the comparing (or the metaphorical term)” (M. Tutescu, 1998: 282). In the theater of V. Hugo, the argumentative metaphor is extremely visible alongside the poetic metaphor.
