Summary/Abstract: The introduction to the Balkan Human Rights Network's annual report 2007, "CSR in the Western Balkans: Opportunities and Challenges" provides an account of the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), its background and history, and the current challenges and controversies of CSR. From then on, the article gives a brief overview of CSR in the Western Balkans and the present initiatives and actors. The article argues that while CSR remains a new and marginal phenomenon in the region, there are signs of change and increasing awareness about CSR. The last section in the article presents the cooperation between the Balkan Human Rights Network and the Danish Institute for Human Rights on CSR and human rights & business, and the development of the Balkan Quick Check-a human rights self-assessment tool for Balkan companies.
