About a less known category of princely servants from Wallachia and Moldova: the paici or peici

Summary/Abstract: Through this article, we bring to the attention of medieval and early modern history specialists a lesser known category of servants of the princely Courts of Bucharest and Iași. These are the paici or peici. In this article we have tried, as much as the existing historical documentary and narrative sources have allowed us, to reconstruct the history and evolution of this category of princely servants, who provided personal security for the ruler and his court, during the 17th-18th centuries.
