Summary/Abstract: The following pages aim to show how Byzantine artists and orators conveyed the variegated and dappled appearance of terrestrial creation, either through naturalistic descriptions, or else in a more abstract way through symbolic effects. At the same time, I hope to demonstrate that visual art and verbal rhetoric operated under different constraints, which controlled their approaches to the depiction of nature.
