THE MEDIEVAL CEMETERY AT ALBA IULIA ARHIM. IULIU HOSSU STREET (FORMERLY “BRANDUSEI”); RESCUE EXCAVATIONS FROM 1999

Summary/Abstract: This study presents the discoveries from the 1999 recovery excavations located in Alba Iulia, on arhim. Iuliu Hossu Street, on the private property of Mr. Tiberiu Groza. The area of excavations is located in a medieval cemetery discovered in 1997. The investigations from 1999 allowed the unveiling of 23 skeletons, oriented on the axes NE-SW, SW-NE, E-W, or W-E. All the graves contain fauna wherever the best-preserved skeletons are those of adults, or those found in the larger digs. The position of the superior member is quite varied: both arms lie beside the body, other times an arm lies about the pelvis or the thorax, while the other arm lies beside the body. At one skeleton both arms encompass the thorax (M 8). Generally the bodies were disposed in rectangular tombs with round edges, dug in yellow clay at different depths, some of them covered with stone blocks (M 1 – M 21). All the graves contained remains of burnt wood. Funeral material was composed of - jewels made of silver or bronze (a bracelet with sharp edges, a mushroom shaped button and different rings) - donation wares in shape of jars of reduced dimensions, always in a single piece, disposed on the right side of the cranial vault (M 5), pelvis (M 2 – M 23), or beside the tibia (M 22) No military equipment or numismatic pieces were identified. In connection with phase II of the Statia de Salvare cemetery from Alba Iulia, this new discovery could be dated at the first half of the X-th century.
