Summary/Abstract: At the end of the XVIII-th century and the beginning of the XIX-th, the Oriental Issue was a problem of European balance and in the process of maintaining this balance there were mainly involved the great powers: France, England, the Habsburg Empire, Russia. They acted directly or indirectly, through their alliances, thus engaging in the conflict countries not having direct geostrategical interests in the European Orient, but only continental political interests, dictated by the balance of forces, as it evolved during the various stages of the events. The issue of the European balance of forces can also equally be regarded from the perspective of the commercial interests that the great powers had in the area of the Balkans, an area considered as an important commercial bridge between Europe and Asia. Last but not least, this European interest had a decisive role in the process through which Moldavia and Wallachia gained their autonomy and also in the modernization of the Romanian institutions and society, in the period comprised between 1798 and 1853.
