Summary/Abstract: One of the most outstanding American film directors, Martin Scorcese, is in his world view, in his choice of themes and style a creative personality that produces films contrary to the dominant tendencies in Holliwood. Although Scorcese directs feature films, his movies tend towards a documentary identification of place, time and participants in the story. Although his films excel in realistic scenes of action, the instrument of aggression in his movies is by and large dialogue of an unusually violent rhetorical power, unknown in earlier American film industry. The specific character of his films is the urge of his characters towards announcement, an urge that is usually misunderstood - irrespective of the significance and value of announcement. All of these qualities are symptoms of the neurotic world whose »disease« Scorcese is trying to diagnose. The attempt is only partially successful but at least, as in the typical recent American film, the relationship between the referent and reference is not blurred by postmodernist tend encies to fmd models in trivial literature and films.
