Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the activities of the outstanding scientist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, first head of the Institute of Military History of the USSR Ministry of Defense Pavel Andreevich Zhilin. The publication consists of the following parts: a short biography of P. A. Zhilin; the prerequisites that preceded the choice of the sphere of his research activity; the nature of the study of the Patriotic War and the role of Field Marshal M. I. Kutuzov in it. When setting up a scientific problem, the author of the article suggests that the socio-political situation influences the choice of research direction in the field of military history. The example of P. A. Zhilin shows how correctly chosen research topics contributed to the formation of him as a great scholar. The author considers that scientific works devoted to the Patriotic War of 1812 and the personality of M. I. Kutuzov, met the demands of the time. The article uses both general scientific methods and methods of historical science. Using the historical-genetic method, the evolution of the scientist’s views on the subject of his research activity is traced. The historical-comparative method made it possible to compare the differences and similarities in the interpretation of the coverage of the problems of the Patriotic War of 1812 by different scientists. The content analysis method was applied to the study of scientific works of P. A. Zhilin. The material is presented chronologically. The author concludes that the socio-political situation in the country influenced A. P. Zhilin. This influence can be most clearly seen in the way the historian described the historiography of the Patriotic War of 1812. The author of the article notes that military historian P. A. Zhilin always remained faithful to scientific ideals and strived for an objective description of the events of the military history of the Fatherland in his research activities. That’s why the works on military history written by Pavel Andreevich are relevant and in demand at the present time.
