Summary/Abstract: The article addresses and problematizes xenogenders – or gender identities that are formulated and exist beyond categories of masculinity, femininity, gender neutrality, and androgyny. Xenogenders are analyzed here both as having a subversive potential in relation to socially dominant ideas and understandings of gender, and as sources of (identity) pleasures. The pleasures are related to the possibilities of coining of new gender dictionaries, rehearsing various identity options and discussing meanings of xenogenders – especially in terms of enabling linguistic self-determination and exerting agency over one’s gender identity. These seem to be important especially since the xenogender community populates mainly cyberqueer spaces, and is populated mostly by young nonbinary trans people, often neurodivergent, who seek not only self-identification, but also acceptance and belonging since xenogenders are usually marginalized, trivialized or demonized in both the trans community as well as society more broadly. The article offers some insights into possible understandings of xenogenders, and an invitation to their further exploration.
