Summary/Abstract: The experience of the 20th century has demonstrated that the architecture of modernism based solely on function and industrial production of construction elements had lost its links with natural and historical man-made environments. The trends of postmodernist architecture targeted at the limitations of modernism propose the multilingual contextual architecture based on interpretations of the past and traditions. This encourages analysing the possibilities to design in the postmodernist style in the historic urban environment. This research is based on the idea that certain features of the postmodernist architecture, such as its flexibility, links with the context and observer, informativeness and expressiveness, allow searching for the alternatives for the contrasting modernist insertions in the historic urban environments.
