Summary/Abstract: The Finnish lexicon contains a group of verbs which are derived from other verbs with the derivational su(x U, such as vaihtaa > vaihtua ‘to change, exchange’ or jatkaa > jatkua ‘to continue’. $e A-stemmed verbs are generally transitive, while their U-stemmed counterparts are o)en re!exive or automative, indicating that something happens unintentionally or without a human agent, as opposed to the Finnish passive forms which imply an unknown human agent. In practice, however, the semantic and syntactic relationships between these two groups of verbs are not far from clear, varying from one verb to another, which makes even the most advanced learners of Finnish struggle with these verbs.
