Summary/Abstract: This article examines the use of war metaphors in Lebanese cinema, focusing specifically on the allegory of the woman-nation that oscillates between heroic and victimized representations. Faced with the constraints of censorship, filmmakers employ this symbolic representation to address war in a subtle and evocative manner. The heroic representation of the woman-nation takes the form of the nurturing and protective mother of her people. This metaphor is employed to evoke a sense of national pride and resilience, portraying the woman as a symbol of strength and sacrifice during times of conflict. By presenting the woman as the mother-nourisher of the nation, filmmakers aim to foster a collective identity and install a sense of unity and determination in the face of adversity. Conversely, the victimized representation of the woman-nation is used to draw a parallel between the suffering of women and the suffering of the city, which are intrinsically linked. This metaphor allows filmmakers to get empathy and compassion from the audience towards the plight of both women and the city during war. By presenting the woman-nation as a reflection of the urban landscape devastation, filmmakers highlight the profound impact of conflict on both individual lives and the broader social fabric. The metaphorical approach provides an avenue for filmmakers to transcend the boundaries of censorship, ensuring that poignant stories of war can be told without compromising the artistic integrity of their work.
