Summary/Abstract: The author presents the major indicators of the geopolitical and economic situation in the Asia and the Pacific region, which is marked with the elements of the developing regional cooperation as well as competition on the economic and military plane. What arises from that is the problems resulting from the needs to ensure proper safety of transporting a large quantity of raw materials and other goods via the sea in the face of the threat of piracy acts and other forms of organised crime which bears crossborder attributes, particularly in straits, archipelago passages and in the area of high seas. The object of the analysis is both the considerations of the international law as to navigation protection in the waters of Asia and the Pacific against piracy acts and armed robbery in the light of the evaluation of the effectiveness of applying the primary regulations in the form of selected conventions (UNCLOS-1982, SUA – 1988) and the development of the legal and treaty as well as organisational forms of the fairly broad regional and subregional cooperation – also with the participation of the International Maritime Organisation and ASEAN.
