Summary/Abstract: From the perspective of (auto)biographical self-fashioning strategies, the articleanalyzes descriptions of class shame submitted to memoir writing competitions forrural women in 1936 and 1961. Following Kaye Mitchell’s ideas for interpreting womenautobiographies, the memoirs serve as examples of life writing texts that reinforce theauthors’ subjectivity and pose a challenge to the culture of class or gender shaming andhumiliation. In turn, the article presents the archival collections of competition memoirsas an underappreciated source of testimonies to the social and political transformationsof the twentieth century through the lens of first-hand class experience.
