Summary/Abstract: This article examines the features and limitations of early acoustic recordings of classical music by analysing the recording and reproduction system, the conditions in which they took place, and the way in which they were preserved and digitised. The aim is to get to the point where a recording can be a true image of a live performance. The paper aims to encourage in-depth research into the use of past recordings as evidence of performing styles and musical traditions of the past.
