Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to highlight the manner in which two great writers tried to provide solutions to the thorny problem of alienation as part of the ancient conflict between society and the individual. There are two nineteenth-century writers who confront the problem of alienation without in any way trying to alleviate it: James in “The Princess Casamassima” (1885) and Stendhal in “Le Rouge et le Noir” (1830). These two books, widely separated as they were in points of time, were written by men of completely different backgrounds and temperaments. In both of these novels we can discover a prototype of the alienated hero as we meet him in contemporary literature.
