Summary/Abstract: The responsibilities of the fire brigade encompass operational activities related to radiation emergencies, which include: identifying the source of the threat, rescuing people, animals and property, securing the area and preliminary decontamination of the area. While performing these acti- vities, it is necessary to use high-level personal protective equipment, which may be repeatedly exposed to harmful ionizing radiation and other harmful chemicals associated with the decontamination process. The action of ionizing radiation on polymer and textile materials causes primary and secondary physicochemical processes, leading to irreversible chemical changes that may affect the protective properties of these materials. Therefore, from the point of view of the safety of fire brigade employees, it is important to determine the impact of radiation and decontamination procedures on maintaining the effectiveness of personal protective equipment.
