Summary/Abstract: Based on Tsvetan Todorov's essay Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, which serves as the foundation for defining the concept of the fantastic, this paper explores whether Guy de Maupassant's short story „The Horla“ possesses characteristics of the fantastic. Using a comparative method, we examine to what extent the first version of „The Horla“ from 1886 and the second version from 1887 belong to the genre of fantastic literature, relying on the definitions from dictionaries and opinions provided by French and Serbian literary criticism, and limiting our analysis to two areas: the differing formal structures of the two versions and the distinct styles employed in each. This text can serve as a starting point for further research into Maupassant's literary works, particularly those dealing with his fantastic short stories: first of all „The Horla“ (both versions of this story), but also „A Madman?“ (1884), „Letter from a Madman“ (1885) and other fantastic short stories.
