Summary/Abstract: Energy makes today one of the most important issues in the development of any society, and as such it has to be one of the top priorities of the agenda of a country. The global energy consumption is rapidly increasing while the traditional sources of energy are being exhausted. Faced with this situation, it is necessary for the states to undertake the necessary steps to guarantee energy supply. States can do this only by: creating their own energetic profile, identifying priorities of energy policies, making and implementing efficient strategies based on the problems they have to face. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analytical approach over the energy security in the Balkans. Regardless of the existence of an abundant literature concerning energy security, there is no comprehensive definition over the term. The concept of energy security is an umbrella concept which encompasses a multitude of complex variables that take shape and importance based on the position each state has to energy sources (exporting, importing, or transition country). Thereupon, in the field of security energy approach two operational concepts are being selected, the energy dependence and the diversification of energy sources. Simply put, with energy security is understood the sustainable availability of energy sources at a favourable price. The focus of this paper is the Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Rumania, Serbia and Turkey.). The data for the economic and energy indicators, which make reference to years 2011 – 2012, come from the World Bank, International Energy Agency, and the International Monetary Fund.
