Summary/Abstract: Taking into account the ever-increasing rate of divorces at the European level and the impact of this event in the whole family system, it is important to identify alternative ways to the traditional ones (judicial) to solve optimally the problems generated in this context. Mediation is one of the most viable alternatives to resolve issues related to this context, and in the case of general controversies arising in divorcing couples. This paper aims to highlight the common elements and those that distinguish the mediation process from therapy itself. The approach emphasizes the importance of language to the specific goals and types of intervention, presenting the techniques characteristic to each approach.
