Summary/Abstract: Ever since 2010, new Bulgarian feature films have enjoyed unprecedented success unparalleled over the recent two decades. These achievements are worth analysing in the context of the box offices of Bulgarian films over the recent hundred years. Vasil Gendov underscored the success of The Bulgarian Is Gallant (1915), shown in the cinemas for a fortnight. To the pioneer of Bulgaria film it was crucial later as well. In 1936, Gramada clocked up 65,000 admissions in the space of 4 weeks in Sofia. In the 1950s and the 1960s, millions watched Bulgarian movies. Still, gradually it became utterly irrelevant to the filmmakers. In the 1990s and the 2010s, producers/directors shielded themselves behind the convenient smokescreen of the auteur cinema to explain as to why they had less than 1,000 admissions. But something happened, something that had probably happened earlier.
