Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of fortification walls of Pechersk monastery (12th century) – a unique site of monumental architecture of Kyiv in the principality era. The analysis of the written sources allows the researcher to consider critically the dating of a single epistle that directly points to the existence of the walls and the time of their construction. Archaeological excavations held in 1951-2018 not only confirmed the existence of the walls, but also allowed the archaeologists to reconstruct their structure. Additional research carried out in 2018 made it possible to partially reconstruct some engineering and structural preparatory steps that preceded the construction of the walls, their height and planigraphy in the territory of Pechersk monastery. The study of analogous constructions located in the territory of Kyivan Rus revealed common features in the use of materials necessary to construct walls in Kyiv and Pereyaslav. Besides, some basic structural elements appeared to be similar to those used to construct Staraya Ladoga and Izborsk monuments.
