Summary/Abstract: The paper gives a brief history of books and the illustration/text relationship, the variety of illustration techniques, the function and the role of illustrations in books. I offer an updated definition of the specific characteristics of illustration: to be consistent with the conception of the publisher and the ultimate goals of the edition; to highlight the specifics of the book in question; to cultivate and foresee the expectations of the reading audiences, their skills, to arouse their curiosity, etc. How do contemporary Bulgarians comprehend illustrations and how much importance do they attach to illustrations with reference to comprehension of the text of a book? I devised a questionnaire for a study: The role of illustration in comprehension of the text of a book. The questionnaire included questions concerning illustration of children’s books, fiction for adults, academic literature, technical publications, etc.
