Summary/Abstract: This article describes the legislative and organisational development of examinations of fitness to teach at secondary schools. Such exams were administered to students of universities and technical universities by the Examination Committee for Teaching at Secondary Schools in Prague in 1850–1950. A committee that examined in the Czech language was established in 1871 by splitting from the German-speaking committee. Since 1870, these examinations had to be taken also by candidates wishing to teach at Realschulen (practically oriented secondary schools). In 1911–1948, these examinations had to be taken by university students who wished to teach at any type of a secondary school.
