EXPLORING TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN PATIENT INFORMATION LEAFLETS

Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to analyse the translation strategies and procedures used in the translation of Patient Information Leaflets (PILs), having as a framework the methodology proposed by the Canadian scholars Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet (1995). Their book outlines seven strategies of varying complexity which can be employed individually or in combination in order to address potential translation issues across various contexts. Our study will discuss all of them, but particular attention will be given to those most applicable in the translation of PILs. This analysis will provide us deeper insights into the translation of this subgenre of the pharmaceutical discourse, ultimately contributing to facilitating their understanding by the non-specialist readers, the potential users of the medicines in question.
