Summary/Abstract: French and Romanian compound family names mostly come from nicknames. Their origin is rather obscure. Semantically, these names belong to those categories of nicknames that indicate some physical or psycho-moral particularities, but they can also be related to an unusual event from the life of an individual or they can point to the local origin of some persons.
