Summary/Abstract: We can not believe that the East has represented the smiling face of Europe, not even that the major problems of western culture were unknown in the East. On the contrary, both the Russian and Romanian cultures are profoundly concerned with the western cultural movements, where they find models worthy of transportation in their own spreading area or only reference points, in opposition with a kind of negative emulation represented by the national spirit. The western influence was assumed by the young cultures in an eclectic manner, so themes and motifs will convey in transit, out of problems, to the literatures of East. If we study from a larger perspective the Central and East-European literatures, being under the authority of the Soviet Union and the communist regime, they have to fight with the restrictive landmarks of ideology, with what we call now socialist-realism, and afterwards they have to fight against the official literature, the literature of the communist state in general.
